TODDLER SLEEP

18-36 months

Your sweet baby is now a walking, talking toddler. He’s active, opinionated and becoming independent. With all this newfound independence comes an increased need for closeness and connection, which can present as challenges with sleep. Most toddlers transition from two naps to one by 18-19 months. A child that was previously sleeping through the night without needing assistance and support to settle back to sleep, may begin waking in the night again. And many children this age have yet to attain the coveted sleeping through the night milestone. Nap strikes, bedtime battles and early wakes are common. Parents might decide to prematurely stop offering the daytime nap or try a later bedtime, both of which can lead to increased challenges around sleep. Some parents label their toddler as stubborn, spirited or strong-willed, and believe their child may never be an easy sleeper, which makes changing habits and patterns that much harder. Becoming aware of our thoughts and beliefs is the first step in changing them to support our intentions. And having a knowledgeable and experienced guide to answers questions and support that change makes all the difference, easing the way to better sleep for the whole family.

Common Toddler Sleep Questions

Common toddler sleep questions centre around reappearing or continuous night wakes, early morning wakes and notorious naps. Families who are still feeding to sleep, nursing at night, co-sleeping or using more involved routines to help their child sleep may wish to start encouraging more independent sleep skills in their little ones. There can be a lot going on at this age — starting daycare, becoming a big brother or sister, potty training, and big strides in physical, mental and emotional development — and sleep can take a backseat. Unfortunately, a quick Google search to help address these questions and concerns often leads to more confusion and overwhelm. Let me make this easier for you with answers to all your questions and support you can count on.

KID SLEEP

3-8 years

Often when parents reach out for help with their child’s sleep, they’ve been struggling for years with one challenge after another, perhaps with a period of somewhat ease weaved in to make it feel briefly manageable. Some kids have been sleeping great with few issues, but something changed in their world that may have contributed to problematic sleep. Their confidence as an independent person continues to flourish given a stable and loving home environment, but starting school, screen time and a busy schedule, as well as challenges at school, temporary separation from parents and siblings can all wreak havoc with sleep.
